The Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place in 2026, however, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made a major change in leadership that sees India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan to lead the team in the first part of the event. This move is because the regular skipper Pat Cummins is still recovering because of a back injury that is likely to keep him out of early season matches.
The franchise proved that Kishan will play in the role of a temporary captain until Cummins is fully fit and returns to the team. In line with this, the young multi-skilled Abhishek Sharma has been made a vice-captain, and this is a new position of leadership to the young talent in the team.
SRH management explained that it was to maintain stability and continuity in the leadership in the absence of Cummins. The Australian fast bowler is out with a lower back problem which had already taken a toll on his involvement in recent global matches including sections of Ashes and even T20 World Cup.
This appointment of Kishan is regarded as a move that is strategic by the franchise, owing to his recent performances and increasing experiences both at domestic and international levels. The left-handed hitter has been in excellent shape and has contributed to the winning campaign by India in the ICC Men T20 World Cup in earlier years which gave him more impact in becoming a leader.
Kishan has been a recent acquisition, who after being bought at the IPL auction joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad and made an impact in the last season. He hit 354 runs in 14 game at a fantastic strike rate which included a memorable unbeatable century in his first match with the franchise. It is assumed that his forceful approach in the batting order and his capability to deal with situations of pressure were the factors that made the management change their mind.
The leadership call is also received in the midst of a debate in the cricketing community regarding whether to give Kishan or Abhishek Sharma the captaincy position. As Sharma has proven to be one of the brightest young outlooks in the league, SRH has chosen to go with Kishan who has had a more experience and is tactical savvy.
The promotion of Abhishek Sharma as a vice-captain is also indicative of how the franchise plans to develop future leadership but at the same time there would be a balance between young players and experience. The universal player has played a steady game in the last few seasons in SRH and has gained prominence as a result of being an aggressive batsman and a handy hand with the ball. His appointment to the role is likely to provide variety to the team leadership.
How and when the announcement is done is important since the IPL 2026 season will be launched later this month. The debut match of Sunrisers Hyderabad will be against defenders Royal challengers Bengaluru on the day of March 28 in Bengaluru.
The appointment of Kishan is also indicative of an even greater change in the way SRH does things as the franchise seeks to reestablish and reinvent its core following some patchy performances in the last few seasons. The club has been ranked sixth in the IPL of 2025 and has since concentrated on reorganizing the team and the team management.
Although Cummins is the nominated full time captain, the doubt about his fitness led to the proactive decision by the franchise. It is reported that he might be included in the squad later in the tournament after being cleared by the medical personnel but the time of his return is not clear.
This is expected to closely monitor Kishan in his interim leadership that will give him a chance of proving himself as a captain in a franchise cricket. Having a reputation of being aggressive and dynamic on the field, he will be expected to lead a team that consists of a blend of experienced and the upcoming Indians.
The decision has created many interests among fans and analysts with many considering it as a radical but a calculated move on the part of the SRH management. It is believed that the mix of Kishan as a leader and Abhishek Sharma as the supporter would be instrumental in determining how the team performs in the first season of IPL 2026.
