Macau group calls for joint action to enhance casino workplace standards

Key points:

  • Macau United Citizens Association urges better workplace conditions.
  • Seeks buffer period for gaming table layout changes.
  • Calls for clear typhoon guidelines and broader career options.

The Macau United Citizens Association has asked the Government and casino operators to work together. They want to create a better workplace for gaming employees, as reported by the Macao Daily.

Association Executive Director Tong Ho Lam said that the gaming industry is Macau’s biggest job provider. It is very important for the city’s economy. She said that smart gaming table systems have made operations more efficient. However, frequent changes to betting layouts need new felt surfaces. This forces frontline staff to keep adjusting to new procedures.

Without time to adapt, mistakes may occur, sometimes leading to warning letters and additional work stress. Tong suggested that operators give staff a transition period when table layouts change. This will help reduce pressure and encourage a better response to upgrades.

Tong also highlighted concerns over work arrangements during typhoon season. She said that sudden changes in typhoon signals often lead to unstable overtime schedules for staff. They must stay at their posts during severe weather.

She asked the Government to work with casino operators. They should review and improve emergency plans. This includes clear attendance rules for signal No. 8 or higher. They also need better transport arrangements and fair compensation schemes.

Good to know: Frequent betting layout changes require staff to adapt quickly, sometimes with little training

She also mentioned that the past boom in the industry brought many young workers in at once. This could lead to many retirements in the future and cause job stagnation.

To solve this, Tong asked for more varied leisure and tourism projects. This will help Macau become a top global spot for tourism and leisure. It will also provide better job growth and development chances for workers.
