India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur has set her sights firmly on the title as the hosts gear up for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, starting with their opening match against co-hosts Sri Lanka on Tuesday. India, having reached two previous World Cup finals, is eager to break their losing streak. In the 2017 final at Lord’s, they fell short by just nine runs against England. In contrast, the Indian women’s team has shown immense progress since the 2022 edition, where Australia claimed their seventh title.
This year marks the fourth time India will host the Women’s ODI World Cup, with past tournaments held in 1978, 1997, and 2013. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will be hosting the World Cup for the first time, alongside India.
India enters the tournament following a closely contested 2-1 loss to Australia in a three-match ODI series at home. The team impressed with strong batting performances, led by Smriti Mandhana, while the bowling attack showed promise with rising star Kranti Goud, who took five wickets in the series, alongside Australia’s Megan Schutt.
